Cedar Pass Campground in Badlands National Park, South Dakota --> Long Pine State Recreation Area, near Ainsworth, Nebraska

July 15, 2004

The morning sun hit us about 6 am or so. We were ready to leave in about half an hour, by then it was quite-quite hot already.  Instead of heading straight to Nebraska we went on I-90 instead to find a gas station that was also a truck stop. After couple of attempts we found one and showered. At that truck stop we saw the coolest looking family - three men in cowboy outfits.

We then turned towards Nebraska and drove and drove and drove.

By the side of the road were pastures and here and there they were dotted with little pieces of badlands.

It was quite hot and I was not paying enough attention because I missed the state line sign. So the one here is really from a different part of Nebraska state line.

We drove through many small towns and finally decided to stop. It was hot and we were really sticky from sweating. We found a small recreation area just outside a small town. Luckily for us this campsite had a river running through. It was fast, cold, and quite shallow. We were brave and decided to go for a swim to become less sticky. For a long time we just stood in about knee-deep water. Then David became extremely brave and lied down on his stomach. I couldn´t just watch and followed his example. Even though the water was quite cold it was really nice to rinse ourselves in the river. On this campsite we saw fireflies for the first time. We also heard some creatures who made sound like high-voltage electric lines. I think they might be big crickets or something but we decided to call them electricity birds because David kept insisting that it was power line sound!
