Bourquin´s RV park, Colby, Kansas state --> Glendo State Park, Eastern Wyoming

August 06, 2004

We woke up to a grey morning and I crawled under the bus and basically disabled the #3 cylinder. To do this I removed the pushrods, disconnected the sparkplug, and unplugged the fuel injector. I started the bus and was shocked at how well it ran! Of course when we got on the road it had absolutely no power though.

Our first stop was at a tire shop to get a new set of tires, which set us back $240 after mounting and balancing. We then got back on the interstate and headed for Denver. Our speed was reduced by the fact that we now only had three cylinders, but my mind was more at ease since the burnt valve was less likely to snap off and immediately destroy the engine. Also, for some reason that I don't yet understand, it ran much better that way! Still, unless we were going downhill top speed was 45 - 50 mph.
<-- A nice RV we saw at the tire shop. This trip gave us a new appreciation of RVs, although we still think those really massive ones are a bit ridiculous. A small, self contained one like this seems to be the most convenient.

Colorado just got prettier and prettier the farther away from Kansas we got. In all fairness to Kansas, it would probably have been a really nice place had we not been on the interstate. After all, Iowa and Nebraska ended up being pretty nice... Just the same I felt worse about worse about passing through Colorado so quickly than I did about Kansas. We will return once our bus is rebuilt.

We passed through Denver rush hour traffic and stopped at a truck stop for a while, where I called the bank to see why our cards weren't working. It seems Mastercard got hacked and some of the numbers at our bank had been compromised, so they shut off all the cards. Didn't help us much except to reassure us that Homeland Security hadn't decided that Anu was a terrorist or something.

We pressed on into Wyoming. All along the way we saw tonnes of motorcycles headed to Sturgis, where we had been just a few weeks ago. The festivities there where just about to start.

Once again we drove until after dark and ended up camping by a reservoir this time, but at least it was a state park rather than an RV parking lot.
